WAN (Wide Area Network) and LAN (Local Area Network) are two different types of computer networks, which differ in coverage, purpose and technical implementation.
Coverage:
LAN: Usually covers a small geographic area, such as a home, office, or campus. Its range is usually between a few hundred meters to several kilometers.
WAN: Covers a large geographic area, which can span a city, country, or even the globe.
use:
LAN: Mainly used to connect computers and other devices in the same location so that resources (such as printers, file servers) and data can be shared.
WAN: Used to connect LANs in different locations, allowing users in remote locations to communicate and share resources.
Technical realization:
LAN: Usually uses Ethernet or Wi-Fi technology, with faster transmission speed and lower latency.
WAN: Uses a variety of technologies such as DSL, fiber optics, satellite communications, etc., with relatively slow transmission speeds and high latency.
Management and Ownership:
LAN: Usually owned and managed by a single organization or individual.
WAN: May be jointly owned and managed by multiple organizations, or provided and managed by a service provider.
